This search engine optimization company has a slick website with a royal blue and white theme. The main category navigation has an interesting roll-over effect where the icons not selected become grayed out. A reader can maximize the reading room by hiding the nav area which slides shut thanks to the animation prowess of the Script.aculo.us library.
The only thing I would change would change about SEOStudio.co.uk would be the color of the type. Blue on blue provides a low contrast and to aide readability I would pick something lighter.
Smooth icons with a soft glow as well as the eye-catching color choice make this a site I’ll keep track of for times when I need some inspiration.
While we are still on the topic of the power in YouTube, one of my favorite video mash-ups has catapulted its creator to success. The Skeletor Show is a simple remix of old He-Man episodes redubbed and edited in a comedic way (as if the original He-Man cartoons weren’t funny enough). Take a look at the trailer for a better idea…
The Skeletor Show was created by Daniel Geduld, originally from Indiana but he later moved to Los Angeles in hopes of some kind of acting career. As you might imagine, he didn’t get hired for very much and used his free time and voice-over talent to remix Skeletor. Apparently it was time well spent as CNN recently ran an article about him where he is now making a living doing other voice over work. In the credits of each show Daniel added his e-mail address along with the line “Please hire me” and as the show took off, via several popular blogging mentions, sites like Heavy.com came a knocking.
I was shocked to see The Skeletor Show mentioned on CNN. I don’t recall how I stumbled onto it but it was one of the only YouTube series I actually subscribed to and checked for updates. There hasn’t been a new episode in nearly four months, a bittersweet triumph of Daniel’s new found lack of free time. But this is just another example of how a new medium is creating opportunities for up and coming amateurs to be seen by the world. I wonder where we will see Mr. Geduld next.
Incase you didn’t know, this YouTube clip has been viewed just under 9 million times. It appears the Internet is a great tool for sharing your own imitation of what you see on TV. Oh, the power of the Long Tail.
Many grumbling tech nerds complain that Digg.com should really implement a picture section judging from the number of submissions with [pic] in the title. But what they don’t know is that Digg already has a picture section! Don’t believe me, look for yourself. Here is the most popular pictures of the day and here are the upcoming ones. So why is everyone so up in a huff?
I kind of like the mixture of stories which I will never see much of if they create a new section similar to what they have done for videos. What they really need is an “All” section so videos and news stories can mingle together for the benefit of nerd kind. Oh and while we are wishing, Digg might as well throw in a “Digg” category for all of the self-absorbed Digg news that seems to make it to the front page. That is a section I would not include in my filter.
Update: I wrote this last night before Kevin Rose published this entry on the Digg blog. Apparently an “All” section is coming in the near future and a true picture section will hit the scene sometimes around October. My psychic diggness has been off the charts recently.
Lots of people on the Internet seem to think the new kid show that appeared on Nick Jr earlier this week looks a little creepy. I think it looks like fun and unlike Dora The Explorer or Blues Clues I would actual sit down and watch it. Clearly this is the Sesame Street for the new generation of toddlers featuring monsters, robots, and electronic music. The guests have also been modernized and include Elijah Wood teaching kids how to dance and Tony Hawk showing off skateboarding. It’s like Fraggle Rock but indie!
First up, Huang Chunsai, a 31 year old Chinese man, is recovering after having part of his 23 kg (about 50 pounds) facial tumor removed. Before the surgery, Chunsai had trouble seeing, hearing and eating as well as living a normal life. He will have to go under the knife again to remove the other parts of this record-breaking facial growth.
Next we have another Chinese man who is the record holder for the largest hand. Recently, 24 year old Liu Hua arrived for his second surgery to reduce the size of his left thumb, index and middle finger which grew at a faster rate than the other two fingers. During the first surgery on July 20th doctors removed 5.1kg of flesh and bone in the 7-hour procedure. Hua will need to go in later for surgery on his left arm and shoulder.
The be all and end all of Bittorrent sites (pre-PiateBay.org that is), SuperNova.org, has been relaunched thanks to the happy Sweedish pirates over at The Pirate Bay. Besides offering yet another site to grab your warez, the members responsible for the reincarnation have a message for the “non-internet loving companies” out there:
This is how it works. Whatever you sink, we build back up. Whomever you sue, ten new pirates are recruited. Wherever you go, we are already ahead of you. You are the past and the forgotten, we are the internet and the future.
For the past couple of weeks my Internet connection at home has been flakey and irratic. Sites would take multiple refreshes to fully load and there is a good amount of packet loss. Unfortunately this has been on and off making it very hard to troubleshoot exactly what is going on.
I called technical support and the lady on the phone said everything seemed fine on her end. Then she tried to ping my IP address and noticed an 80% packet loss proving there was something going on between my cable modem and Comcast. She put in an order for a tech to come out and replace my rented cable modem.
The tech came and said “Nothin’ is wrong with the modem. It’s something outside which should be fixed in 48-72 hours.” Low and behold 72 hours later nothing has really changed. The connection seems a little better but it is still unusable if I want to get anything done. Apparently I’m not the only person noticing this.
